Preserving the world's cultural heritage can be challenging in even
the most placid of environments, but it is particularly difficult in areas ravaged
by war.
In countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, it is often impossible to assess the damage
to important historic sites, not only from armed conflict, but from the looting
and destruction that accompany a lawless environment.
The restoration of cultural treasures has proven to be effective in healing emotional would of a war-torn country. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are still recovering from the conflict that tore apart Yugoslavia, the restoration of the Stari Most (Old Bridge) and the traditional Ottoman city that surrounded it in the city of Mostar is a tangible sign that communities can work together.
