Review of the history of Hanmer Springs New Zealand
Hanmer Springs has been renowned for its thermal springs for well over a hundred years. The first Europeans to make use of the hot springs, which in those days were simply hot muddy ponds, were passers-by travelling to and from the north.

In 1878, the first on-site building, a two room changing shed, was erected on the edge of the pools by John Fry. Te springs became more and more popular and in 1883 they were officially opened for commercial use.

Fourteen years later the government built a sanatorium to provide lodgings for those using the pools. The mineral waters from the springs were thought to have medicinal value especially for those suffering from arthritis and nervous disorders and when the Sanatorium burnt down in 1914, it was replaced with a fully serviced hospital - the Queen Mary Hospital. Initially the hospital was used for injured servicemen returning from the wars, but more recently it has been used as a rehabilitation centre for alcoholics and drug addicts.

In 1969 the Amuri Council took over the running of the pools which with several redevelopments and extensions formed the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa.
