Fez was founded on the east bank of the Wadi Fs by IdrYs I in about 789. His son, IdrYs II, extended it to the west bank
by about 809. In the 11th century, the Almoravids united the two sections into a major Islamic city, a center of religion, commerce and
scolarship that peaked under the MarYnids in the mid-14th century.
On March 10, 1912, the Treaty of Fs established the French protectorate in Morocco.
