There were at last count 748 parks and gardens in Christchurch City - no wonder they call it the Garden City! Ernest Rutherford, the first to split the atom, was educated here; you can see his laboratory at the Arts Centre. Christchurch is the world's main gateway to the Antarctic. Scientists from all over the world fly to the Antarctic from the International Antarctic Centre.
