Review of the history of Cancun

In 1843, the region was inhabited by Maya Indians, and explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood dubbed it Cancne, which is Mayan for "Vessel at the End of the Rainbow." The area, and Quintana Roo as a whole, remained a backwater, relatively ignored by the Mexican government, until 1970, when the island was selected as a suitable site for an international resort. The channels between Isla Cancn and the mainland were bridged by a causeway and, on the spot where Ciudd Cancn now stands, a town was established to house the workers. In 1974 Cancn opened and was promoted as a major resort; Quintana Roo achieved official statehood at the same time. Cancn was soon embraced by tourists from around the world, who flock to its beautiful beaches, lush jungle, luxury hotels and fine restaurants.
