Bermuda Beaches

Bermuda is famous for its endless stretches of perfectly pink beaches. Their distinctive color is due to the presence of Foraminifera, a tiny single-cell animal. The skeletons of countless millions of these minute creatures are continually calcifying on the reefs along the shore, and are then crushed by the huge, erosive power of the ocean and washed up on the beaches. Bermuda has nearly 25 miles of beach, varying according to the time of year, and some 20 percent of it is open to the public at all times.

But Bermuda's beaches are not, by any means, identical pieces of paradise. As a rough guide, the water tends to be more choppy on the southern shore - ideal conditions for a spot of body surfing. Most people would agree that these beaches are also among the most scenic. But no two are the same; here are some of the best around, with an indication of their individual characteristics...
South Shore Beaches
West Whale Bay, Southampton Parish
Beaches in Bermuda tend to be small by American standards, and this is the smallest of the lot - it has even been known to vanish entirely at certain points of the year. If you're lucky enough to catch this secluded spot, hough, you can't fail to be enchanted by its pink sand and the abandoned 18th century battery that stands guard over it.
Horseshoe Bay, Southampton Parish
This is probably Bermuda's best known, most popular beach, with excellent beach-house facilities and a rocking social scene.
Jobson's Cove, Southampton Parish
This beach is small, cozy and private, for a taste of personal paradise.
Elbow Beach, Paget Parish
This is a lovely and accessible beach if you're staying in the central area of Bermuda. It can be reached off Tribe Rd. #4. The Elbow Beach Hotel sells a variety of snacks and refreshments, encouraging you to relax and wile away the whole day.
North Shore Beaches
Shelly Bay, Hamilton Parish
The calm water off this beach makes it ideal for children and those who can't swim. It offers plenty of beach-based attractions including a beach house, playground and nature trails.
Tobacco Bay, St. George's Parish
This is the best place to go snorkeling, and witness some of the extraordinary aquatic life teeming off Bermuda's rich shores. A coral cove is easily accessible off-shore. Snorkel rentals and beach house are available.
