Scuba Diving information for Belize

   Long the favored destination of divers, Belize offers an extraordinary experience for the beginner as well as the seasoned diving enthusiast. Named to the Skin Diver Magazine Hall of Fame, Belize is the diving capital of the world. With 3,000 square miles of protected water, abundant sea life and the largest living barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, Belize is a Mecca for diving enthusiasts.

Tucked away on the Caribbean coast of Central America, Belize is home to the western hemisphere's largest barrier reef; 70 types of hard corals; more than 400 species of fish; three magnificent atolls; seven aquatic World Heritage sites, nearly 200 offshore cayes, and an endless array of dive sites.

Some of the most popular dive sites include:
Ambergris Caye (Northern Main Reef)
25 miles of solid barrier reef, one-third mile shore, with several channels passing through. Mostly deep diving outside the reef in spur-and-groove coral formation. Rocky Point - Mexico Rocks - Tunnels of Mata - Hol Chon - Caulker Cut
Northern Turneffe
Short walls 40 to 100 ft. Slopes on west. Some sheer drop-offs on east to 70ft. Vertical walls, numerous grouper, shark run. N.W. Hauger Wall - Rendezvous Point - Vicente - Cockroach Slope - N.E. Point.
Lighthouse Reef
Most varied and best diving in Belize. Many sheer drop-offs starting at 30 ft. Safe, calm harbor. Includes thrilling Blue Hole, 150-ft. sinkhole with magnificent stalactites. The Abyss - Sarbo Wreck - Tres Cabasas West Point - North Long Caye Wall - Half Moon Caye Wall - The Blue Hole.
South Turneffe
Deep walls and lots of fish on the east side with short wall and slopes on the more protected west. Loaded with fish; sharp drop-offs; gentle slope. Calabash Wall - Elbow - Tarpan Creek Slope
Central Main Reef
Protected by Turneffe Atoll. Some spur and groove with several interesting deep walls. Plentiful grouper; gentle slope with coral heads. Goff's Caye Groove - St. George's Slope
Glover's Reef
Beautiful walls on southeast face. West wall loaded with fish. Generally the diving is outstanding. Four pretty islands with good anchorages. Northeast Caye Wall - Middle Caye Wall - Southeast Caye Wall - Glover's West Wall
Southern Main Reef
Pretty, small cayes on the reef plateau with good, shallow diving. The wall outside starts at 70ft. and goes vertically out of sight. Plentiful, fish, deep channel canyons, excellent walls and grottos. South Cut - Carrie Bow Ridges - South Water Wall - Laughing Bird - Queen Caye - Tarpum
