Review of international travel to Austria

Air
Austria has three national airlines Austrian Airlines (OS) Lauda Air (NG) and Tyrolean Airways (VO). For free advice on air travel call the Air Travel Advisory Bureau in the UK on (0171) 636 5000 (London) or (0161) 832 2000 (Manchester).

Approximate flight times
From London to Innsbruck is 2 hours to Salzburg is 1 hour 50 minutes and to Vienna is 2 hours 10 minutes.

From Los Angeles to Vienna is 15 hours. From New York to Vienna is 9 hours. From Singapore to Vienna is 14 hours. From Sydney to Vienna is 25 hours.

International airports

Vienna (VIE) (Wien-Schwechat) (Web site: http://www.viennaairport.com) is 18km (11 miles) east of the city. Airport facilities include duty-free shops (0900-1900) banks (0800-1230 and 1330-1500) bureaux de change (0800-2300) post office (0730-2000) 3 restaurants (two open 1000-2200 and the other 1100-1500 and 1800-2400) self-service restaurant (24-hour) four cafés (0600-2100) 2 bars (one open 0600-2200 and the other 0900-1900) left luggage (24-hours) conference facilities (0700-2230) medical facilities car hire (ARAC/Austrian Rent-a-Car Avis Budget Hertz Denzel Europcar Inter-rent and Intercity Car Rental) car park and nursery. The airport bus goes between the airport and the city centre (Hotel Hilton Vienna Westbahnhof and Vienna Südbahnhof) every 30 minutes 24 hours a day at a cost of ASch70 (travel time – 40 minutes). Rail service is available every half hour (from 0500-2200) to and from Wien Nord Station at a cost of ASch35 (travel time – 40 minutes). A rail service is also available from the airport to the Vienna railway stations of Südbahnhof (travel time – 20 minutes) and Westbahnhof (travel time – 35 minutes) every hour. Taxis are available to the city and can be found north of the Arrivals Hall costing approximately ASch350. A chaffeur-driven car service is also available from the Arrivals Hall.

Innsbruck (INN) (Kranebitten) is 5.5km (3.5 miles) from the city. Airport facilities include duty-free shop (0530-1830) currency exchange restaurant (1000-2200) medical facilities and car hire (Avis Budget Hertz andEuropcar InterRent). Bus services are available every 20-30 minutes to the city centre (travel time – 20 minutes). Taxi services are also available.

Salzburg (SZG) (Maxglan) is 4km (2.5 miles) west of the city. Airport facilities include duty-free shopping (0600-2200) currency exchange (0600-1800) post office (0900-1200 and 1400-1800) two restaurants and three snack bars (0800-2100) bar left luggage conference rooms (within the Airest Restaurant 0700-2300) and car hire (Avis ARAC/Interauto Europcar and Hertz). Bus no. 77 departs to the city centre every 15 minutes weekdays and every 30 minutes weekends (travel time – 20 minutes). Taxis are available from the front of the main building for approximately. ASch180 (travel time – 15 minutes). Some hotels have courtesy coaches.

Klagenfurt (KLU) (Wörther See) is 4km (2.5 miles) from the city. Bus and taxi services are available.

Note - Airports have fixed charges for portering.

Sea
The quickest and most practical international sea route from London to Vienna is via the Dover–Ostend ferry (3 hours 30 minutes). The distance by road is approximately 1600km (1000 miles). It is a day's drive in summer but can take longer in winter. Munich is four to five hours from Vienna; Milan and Zurich are a good day's drive. DDSG-Blue Danube Schiffahrt operates a passenger service on the Danube from Passau to Vienna. For information and reservations contact Österreichisches Verkehrsbüro Friedrichstrasse 7 1010 Vienna. Overnight cruise packages from Passau to Linz include hotel accommodation for only slightly more than the regular one-way passenger fare. Evening and music cruises are available in the summer. DDSG-Blue Danube Schiffahrt also operate a hydrofoil service from the Praterlande hydrofoil dock in Vienna to Budapest (travel time – 6 hours). Ardagger operate services between Linz and Krems. A regular hydrofoil service also runs three times daily during the summer months from Vienna to Bratislava (travel time – 1.5 hours).

Rail

There are daily international services from London to Austrian destinations. The through trains are as follows:

Calais–Basle–Innsbruck (Arlberg Express).

Ostend–Aachen–Cologne–Munich–Salzburg.

Note - In winter there is no direct service on this route: change trains at Munich.

Ostend–Brussels–Cologne–Frankfurt/M–Vienna (Austria Nachtexpress).

Fare reductions are indicated in the international railway fare catalogue (TCV) and Austria is included in the Eurailpass and Eurail Youthpass scheme. Other major international train routes include Innsbruck–Munich Vienna–Salzburg–Munich–Paris Vienna–Prague–Berlin Vienna–Warsaw (or Kiev)–Minsk–Moscow Vienna–Budapest–Bucharest Vienna–Belgrade–Athens Vienna–Belgrade–Istanbul Innsbruck–Verona–Venice (or Milan) Innsbruck–Verona–Bologna–Florence–Rome Vienna–Nuremberg–Frankfurt/M–Cologne Vienna–Salzburg–Munich–Paris Vienna–Venice Innsbruck–Zurich.

Road
