Australia Diving Information
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's great scuba diving meccas, with some other lesser known but excellent sites around the country beginning to attract attention. Dive facilities in Australia are of a high standard, and scuba courses are not that expensive, though if you simply want to try it once there are plenty of people offering closely supervised "resort dives".

Good rental gear is widely available, but if you're bringing your own check for compatibility problems; yokes are the Australian norm, so if your first-stage fitting is DIN (likely in Europe and the UK), you'll need an adaptor.

Here is a quick list of the best dive sites in Australia...

HMAS Brisbane Sunshine Coast, QLD
The Steel Cat site, which lies in the Ex-HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park 2.8 nautical miles off Mudjimba Island, offers divers the full spectrum of dive experiences.
Bougainville Reef Coral Sea, QLD
Exceptional in every way; kilometre deep coral walls, clear water, and both reef and pelagic life in abundance. Live aboard trips from Cairns and Port Douglas.
Cod Hole Great Barrier Reef, QLD
Where the giant potato cod and divers meet. Live aboard trips from Cairns.
Lord Howe Island NSW
The world's southernmost reef surrounds one of the world's most beautiful islands. Flights from Brisbane and Sydney.
Ningaloo WA
Late March or April sees scores of whale sharks - the world's largest fish - assembling at Ningaloo Reef off Exmouth for a free feed or coral spawn. Tours from Exmouth.
Seal Rocks NSW
Hosts a great grey nurse convergence every so often, a chance to be surrounded by these fierce looking but largely harmless sharks. Trips from Foster or Tuncurry.
Yongala Shipwreck QLD
Huge fish and the remains of a 100m-long passenger liner which went down in an early 20th century cyclone. Trips from Townsville and Cairns.
