With three huge harbours and a gulf full of islands, the Auckland region is as much about the seas as it
is about land. From the CBD you can catch a ferry to one of the many seaside villages or take a relaxing harbour cruise or trip
to one of the many islands.
Devonport
A 10 minute ferry ride from the CBD take you to port village of Devonport. The Royal New Zealand Navy operates a base in
the town and several historic sites are connected to the town's military past.
Twin volcanic peaks, Mount Victoria and North Head, were both significant in early New Zealand history, with the latter serving
as an artillery battery with tunnels, chambers and gun emplacements to defend Auckland from invasion.
Today, thousands of visitors enjoy Devonport's stylish restaurants, bars, galleries, museums and shops.
Waiheke Island
Just 35 minutes cruising from Auckland, Waiheke Island is 92 sq. kms of beautiful sandy beaches, native bush, vineyards,
olive groves and laid back seaside villages. Choose from the many activities available on the island such as ocean kayaking,
horse riding, mountain biking, or coastal and bush walking. Fullers offers a Vineyard Tour that takes in 3 of the islands
winning wineries with full commentary and tastings. For more information on the Waiheke ferry, check out their website.
Tiritiri Matangi
There is a special place where the air is fresh, the scenery rich and the birdsong closer than you've ever experienced. Let the magic
of this treasured island unfold as you cruise the coastline to Tiritiri Matangi, a world renowned bird sanctuary. Embark on
a guided walk and discover the honest delight of nature and rare native birds in their natural habitat.
Rangitoto Island
Sitting majestically in he Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto Island's distinctive shape is visible from all over Auckland. Commanding
superb views of the city and surrounding islands from its summit, its terrain is a testament to the last volcanic eruption 600
years ago. Rugged lava crops, lush native bush and sandy coves; turn of the century holiday baches with contrasting echoes of
early Maori heritage. Journey through Pohutukawa forest, lava trails and fern glens on a guided 4WD road train or freedom walk, taking
time to pause at lookouts along the way.
