Cape Reinga Lighthouse Northland New Zealand
This lighthouse became operational in 1941. The original lens shipped from
England
was first installed on Motuopao Island in 1879 The island can be seen SW of Cape Reinga.
The light is 165m above sea level and the concrete tower is 10m in height. The original lens revolved around a 1000watt lamp and could be seen for 26 nautical miles, 48km. The electric power
was provided by a diesel generator.
A new 50 watt beacon replaced the original lens and lamp in may 2000 and its power supply converted to batteries and solar power. The new beach flashes once ever 12 seconds and can be seen for 19
nautical miles 35km.
The operation of the light is now automatic and is monitored in Wellington.
